What are RSS News Feeds?

News feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content. You can get the latest headlines, news stories and video all in one place, as soon as its published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.

Feeds are also known as RSS for short or 'Really Simple Syndication' if you want the long version! The feeds themselves are really just web pages, designed to be read by computers rather than people.

So how do I get a news reader?

In general, the first thing you need is something called a news reader. This is a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new news stories, or articles, that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications.

There is a range of different news readers available and new versions are appearing all the time. Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer. The BBC news site lists some popular news readers.

How do I add content to my news reader?

Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive. To do this look out for the bright orange button or links marked 'RSS' on your favourite websites. Once you've located this, there are a number of ways to subscribe to an RSS feed, including the following:

  • Drag the orange RSS button into your News Reader
  • Drag the URL of the RSS feed into your News Reader
  • Click on the orange button, then cut and paste the URL of the RSS feed into your News Reader.

Or if you're unsure, simply follow your news readers instructions to subscribe. You'll find our RSS feeds below:
